The municipality will take action against the convention center | Kochi News


Thrissur: The UDF-led Irinjalakuda Municipality on Tuesday decided to take “legal action” on demands to close the MCP convention center – owned by KPCC general secretary MP Jackson – here following a charges of illegal construction and tax evasion.
The UDF and LDF have 19 members in the 41-member city council, while the remaining three members are from the BJP. Congress candidate Nimya Shiju was elected chairman of the board by lot.
Opposition councilors launched a protest in council on Tuesday, alleging that the municipality was taking no action against the blatant violation of the owners of the convention center.
According to opposition advisers, the convention center had nine rooms and it had only received a certificate of partial completion, and that also for one room, when it was inaugurated in 2013 by the chief minister of the era, Oommen Chandy.
However, the owners were using the nine rooms, which together had an area of ​​12,000 square meters, even though they only paid tax for one room, they alleged.
BJP advisers had come to the council with signs demanding the closure of the convention center and they launched a sit-in inside the hall holding signs and waving slogans.
Later, all of the opposition members, who formed the majority in the council, launched a blockade against the president for about two hours.
The city president later said she asked the city secretary to take legal action regarding the charges.
City secretary Beena S Kumar admitted that officials responsible for inspecting the building had so far taken no action against “unauthorized occupation” by the owners of the convention center.
She said there were discrepancies in the area details submitted by the owners of the convention center.
The secretary, however, denied the allegation that she concealed the report of officials who inspected the building on September 9.
She said notices would be issued to homeowners regarding violations and that the Planning Wing was empowered to take legal action in the event of the violation.
“I have the license issued to the convention center which is valid until March 31, 2017. I had informed the council of the willingness to remit the taxes earlier itself. I have all the documents with me and I will present them to the media on Wednesday, ” Jackson said.
