Tehran municipality withdraws bust of Jamshid Mashayekhi for correction

TEHRAN – The bust of Jamshid Mashayekhi has been removed for correction, the Tehran municipality announced on Tuesday, just four days after its installation.

The bust, which was installed near the actor’s house, has been criticized for its faint resemblance by many, including Ahmad Masjed-Jamei, a member of the Tehran city council.

“According to sculptor Reza Hassanzadeh, the bust was not complete and needs to be changed. He was brought back to the master’s workshop for some corrections, ”said the director of the public relations office of the municipality of Tehran, Majid Salehi Firuzabadi.

Sculptor Hassanzadeh, member of the Iranian Sculptors Association, made the bust from a portrait selected by Mashayekhi’s family.

“We are sure of the quality of master Hassanzadeh’s works, but he fell ill and could not finish the bust until the scheduled date,” added Salehi Firuzabadi.

During the Sunday city council meeting, Masjed-Jamei lamented that Mashayekhi’s bust does not look like him at all.

“The bust does not look anything like the actor, and he does not deserve his name and position, and I hope the bust will be replaced soon,” he said and asked the Tehran Municipality to ” be more sensitive to national figures.

Tehran City Council Chairman Mohsen Hashemi also voiced his criticism of the bust and urged sculptors to pay more attention to making statues of national luminaries.

The actor’s bust was unveiled near his home in the Velenjak district on Friday during a ceremony attended by Mashayekhi’s family, Tehran mayor Piruz Hanachi and several artistic and cultural figures.
