SUNDARHARAICHA: Sundarharaicha Municipality in Morang District has started formulating land use plans and works in line with the Government’s National Land Use Policy.

The policy was introduced in 2019 to regulate land management and ensure sustainable use of land resources in the country. According to Sundarharaicha Municipality Spokesperson, Roshan Prasad Dhakal, the municipality has started the preparatory work related to the implementation of the policy related to land use in the 110 km2 municipality.

Interaction programs have been initiated between residents and stakeholders at ward level to facilitate technicians in land categorization in the municipality which has 80,518 people at the 2011 census.

Picaso Consultancy won the land categorization contract from the municipality which started work in Wards 10 and 12.

Consultant Tara Khatiwada advised that work related to land use would be continued based on current land condition, productivity, population estimate, land price and plotting rate, among others.

The municipality, however, will undertake the work of the land use board itself, Khatiwada added. He said that at least two kattha of land were needed in agricultural land and at least 7.5 dhur of land was essential for residential purposes.

The land will be classified into agricultural, residential, industrial and forest areas and watershed and other areas ensuring the participation of the local community. The new categorization system will be implemented in place of Abbal, Goyam, Sim and Chahar, the traditional ways of categorizing land.

Data would be collected and mapping done in the first phase. Further work will follow thereafter, spokesman Dhakal informed.
