PODCAST: Focus on your community Part 1: Hammanskraal, Gauteng – SABC News


Hammanskraal – a small town in northern Gauteng – falls under the Municipality of Tshwane City. It has a population of over 21,000 people according to the last census.

Hammanskraal consists of urban and rural settlements with multiple residential, industrial and commercial areas in a decentralized settlement model.

There are approximately 6,271 households and 21.1% of them live in informal dwellings.

Almost 32% of residents have completed matrix studies or higher while 29% are unemployed.

Water supply has been a problem in the area. The demand for water has exceeded the number of taps, resulting in the use of water tankers to meet the needs of the people in the area.

In 2019, water tests conducted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research found that the area’s water was unfit for human consumption due to traces of E. coli and nitrates caused by sewage discharge from the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant into the Apies River. then to the Leeuwkraal Dam – the main source of water for Hammanskraal.

In this weekly article, SABC News captures the voices of communities about their experience with the services provided by their municipality. This week, Digital News producer Lebo Tshangela speaks with the community leader and the residents of Hammanskraal.
