Appian (NASDAQ: APPN) announces that the Municipality of Milan has deployed Appian’s low-code platform to automate and digitize key processes as part of a larger plan to transform the citizen experience and innovate service delivery. As the second most populous region in Italy, the municipality of Milan serves more than one million inhabitants and is considered a leader in innovation and excellence for Italy.
Led by Intellera Consulting and developed in less than two months, the Municipality‘s first Appian application manages the end-to-end process of obtaining parking cards and disabled permits for residents and visitors. The aim is to speed up and improve the experience of a vital service for the citizens of Milan, a densely populated area of around 2,000 inhabitants per kilometer.
The new digital process allows citizens to initiate applications online by going through the registration process and then uploading the required documentation through the Elixform platform. Once the digital form is submitted, public administrators process complete applications in a few simple steps guided by the Appian app, including document identification and verification, pass creation and delivery.
“The project started with a single application, but we extended the scope to other areas in just a few months. The technical managers of the Municipality of Milan were impressed by the speed of delivery of the solution on the platform Appian Low-Code and have become internal champions,” said Ivan Epicarmo Sessa, IT Strategy and Governance Competency Center Manager at Intellera Consulting. “Appian is an important technology within the application portfolio that allows a new leap forward and more agility to continue on the path of digitalization of the Municipality.”
Parking pass management is one of many new systems aimed at improving various services to citizens. The municipality’s digital transformation program includes identifying and creating an accelerated path to digitalization and streamlining processes in different areas, including:
- Provide a self-service online career training portal for citizens, including scholarship applications for eligible citizens, certificate accreditation, and class assignment.
- Streamlined planning and public works permit processes for citizens to apply for building permits, developers to submit redevelopment proposals, and construction companies to obtain work permits.
The modernization of infrastructure and technological systems supports the municipality’s ambition to transform itself through the use of innovative technologies, one of the main recovery strategies of the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
“We are very proud to provide the technology to help the Municipality of Milan improve and modernize its services to citizens. Technology is a key driver to improve services to citizens and we are honored to work with another local public administration in Italy,” said Silvia Fossati. , Area Vice President Southern Europe at Appian. “Over the past few years, the Italian government has made digitization a priority and the Appian Low-Code platform continues to be an invaluable technology enabler to accelerate the implementation of projects for enterprises and public administrations.
