THE Last Sunday, the Hindu Community of British Columbia organized a cultural awareness event to highlight various aspects of Hindu civilization – from ancient Indian mathematics and education to yoga and divinity – in elementary school Surrey’s Bear Creek. Sunder Rajan gave a presentation on “India – An Ancient Civilization in a Modern World”.
Over 300 visitors, Hindus and non-Hindus alike, have registered to take part in this dynamic and fun three-hour event. Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, Labor Minister Harry Bains, MP John Aldag, Surrey Councilors Allison Patton, Brenda Locke and Linda Annis, former Minister Dr Gulzar Cheema and RCMP Staff Sgt. Jag Saran was among those present.
Along with an informative and engaging exhibition, dance performances showcased the rich and diverse cultures of India: Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh, Ghoomer from Rajasthan, Bhangra and Gidhha from Punjab and Bharatanatyam from ancient India.
HSS Hindu leader Parshotam Goel said: “We had an overwhelming response from the community beyond our expectations. He added that this event gave them the confidence to organize a series of such exhibitions in different cities of British Columbia to create awareness and meaningful participation.
