ST. MARY’S – Honoring St. Mary’s entrepreneurs for their community spirit during the COVID-19 emergency will be high on the agenda for the 2021 Small Business Appreciation Night and Awards next week in Sherbrooke.

“The Municipality believes that the hard work of these companies, especially during the pandemic, should be admired and celebrated,” said Marissa Jordan, District Economic Development Officer for the Municipality of St Mary, of the event. The Small Business Appreciation Night, hosted by city council and staff during Canadian Small Business Week, has become a tradition in the city. “For several years, we have been celebrating [it] as an opportunity to bring our companies together to [recognize] their accomplishments, ”Jordan said. “Our small businesses are extremely important to the municipality and help shape and improve our communities. ”

While a recent Statistics Canada report indicates that the pandemic has hit the country’s small business sector – which accounts for 98% of all “employer” businesses – particularly hard, St. Mary’s small private businesses – which number by the hundreds and occupy a diverse resource, professional, small industrial and personal service sectors, according to the 2016 Canadian census, have continued to contribute to the social fabric of the community.

To help the region continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and define its economic agenda for the years to come, the council recently agreed to explore the possibilities of creating a new business group.

“A chamber of commerce would allow St. Mary’s businesses to take a collaborative and organized approach to advance the interests of the business community, including: networking, advertising, advocacy and planning,” Jordan said. in August. “Over the next year, the municipality will explore the idea. ”
