A young artist and prominent lawyer has become the new president of Mangaldai Municipality

MANGALDAI :: Nirmali Devi Sharma was chosen as the new chairwoman of the historic 65-year-old Mangaldai City Council on April 18. Nirmali, a bachelor law graduate and top actor, was elected to the civic body of Ward No. 1 of Darrang district city headquarters. She would be the 21st president of the civic body. The position of president of the municipality was this time reserved for women.
The decision to select the president came from the state BJP in a sealed envelope which was opened in front of all newly elected civic body members of the party at a function held attended by senior party leaders including Amarendra Sarma, Chairman, BJP District, Darrang, Ashok Sarma, Former MP, Nalbari, Dr. Juri Sarma Bordoloi, District Deputy Prabhari and Gurujyoti Das, Former MP, Mangaldai at party office here. Informing District BJP Chairman Amarendra Sarma said the selection came from a report previously submitted by a special team led by Ashok Sarma which collected the personal opinion of all newly elected party members from civic bodies . Achyut Das, the elected member of Ward No. 4, Mangaldai was chosen as deputy (vice-president) of Nirmali. Similarly, in the Sipajhar municipal council, where the position of president is also reserved, Pinakshi Sarma has been chosen as the new president while Abhinav Hazarika will be his deputy. On the other hand in Kharupetia Krishna Saha, a former president of the civic body was once again offered the opportunity although the post was not booked this time. Ashim Saha will be the vice president of the local urban body. They will all be sworn in on April 20.
